The Mini Session! {Golden & Denver, CO Family and Children Photographer}

You may recognize these two sweethearts! I have done several sessions with them over the past few years…And I know I have said it before, but I just love watching the children I photograph grow and grow and change and change… but yet, stay the same. πŸ™‚ I know you know, what I mean. I just love that.

Well, this was my one and only mini session this year (besides the maternity mini’s I do). I have to admit, I am so torn about the “mini session”. I know a lot of photographers offer them, but I struggle with it.

I want to get to know you… and with a mini session that lasts 15-20 minutes (with another family scheduled behind you)… well, I feel like we are just scratching the surface of capturing your family, most genuinely… and we just don’t dive into the place where the standard “I am getting my photo taken” smiles disappear and transform into genuine giggles.Β  And where the uncomfortable stiffness of “I do not enjoy getting my photo taken” melts into “I am just having fun with my kids!”Β  And I value those images more than anything!!! And I hope you do too!!

And maybe it is just me. But, I want to become a part of your family for the hour or so we are together. I want to focus only on you and your family! I want to get to know your children! I want your kids to love me and love getting their photo taken because they know it is… well, FUN!

So, as I think about plans for 2012 – I am trying to think more about the mini session (and I totally get their appeal!), but truthfully… it is undecided… but I am leaning towards only offering them in the fall, and only offering them to families I have done full sessions with that year. Which is why I agreed to this fun and quick session with the Dickey children! πŸ™‚ This way, our 15-20 minutes together is a fun, playful reunion, perfect for your holiday card.. and well, not an introduction.

I really hope to catch up on some blogging this week, before I head out on vacation with my family from Dec 24 – Jan 1. πŸ™‚

So, talk to you soooon! πŸ™‚

I also only do mini sessions in the fall. I like your idea to only do them for families you’ve already done full sessions for — that way you already know them! I totally agree that it’s hard to capture the true essence of the family in such a short time… I struggle with the same thing! Your photos are beautiful from the session! My favorite is the one of the brother/sister in color – so gorgeous!!
