Milestones. {Golden & Denver, CO Family & Children’s Photographer}

My daughter, Mica, got her very first “real” haircut yesterday and it got me thinking about milestones.

Bottom line, they are a big deal.

They help us track the passage of time and accomplishment… and if you notice… it is at milestones that we pull out our cameras – because it IS a big deal. We don’t want to forget. From first bath and first steps to graduation and wedding days. They are a big deal.

And yesterday, as my 2.5 year old sat so patiently in the salon chair, I was clicking the shutter of my camera. Not because that is what I do as a photographer, but because she is growing up, I am her mom and I just don’t want to miss a moment… and I don’t want to forget. I don’t want to forget how proud she was, yet so serious as Jamie trimmed her hair — and how her shoes barely reached the chair’s edge. Or how she was given a bubble gum flavored candy cane when they finished and the smile that quickly spread across her face when she said “I really like this candy, mama”. So, I captured it…with my camera and now I have it forever. For me. For her and for those who she is yet to meet that will love her and ask her questions about what she was like at 2 years old. Perhaps a bit overdramatic for first haircut photos (smile), but when I think about milestones, I easily drift from yesterday’s hair cut… into newborn photos, and toddler moments. The first day of school or days with braces. They are all important. They are our story!

Which is why I loved this session with Rylan and his Mom and Dad. I feel we captured something so very special.

Rylan, at one year old.

This is important.

With a few “first’s” behind him, but soooo many yet still ahead. We captured his steady, yet unsteady, wide gait as he is perfecting his walking… and his parents unwavering enthusiasm. How his eyes light up when he sees his parents and his curiosity to explore the world.  And how it takes Rylan’s whole hand to wrap around his Dad’s finger. This is all a big deal! And I just love that they will now have these moments forever. For them. For Rylan… and for all of those who he is yet to meet that will love him… and want to know what he was like at one year old.

So whether you hire a professional or use your own point and shoot. Keep shooting!! I promise you that you will never regret taking a photo… but you may regret that you never did.

Mandy, Tucker and Rylan… thank you for trusting me to capture this awesome time in your life! I hope to watch Rylan grow and capture many more wonderful days in his life as the years pass!

I love this photo of Rylan. Look at that light in his eyes… he just spotted his mom! 🙂
