Dear Mica…

Mica,

Your excitement is contagious. I love how you effortlessly threw your arms up in the air when you announced this morning “One week left of school!” All I can do is smile and celebrate with you! Yes, next week you graduate from Kindergarten. In some ways, I feel like I missed the emotional punch in the arm that most parents feel when your child enters Kindergarten because you were able to stay at the same school where you went to pre-school here in Golden. But, I gotta tell you… I am feeling it now. For about a week I have been all gooey and nostalgic… and have noticed myself taking a step back and breathing it all in. This past year has been incredible for you. I have seen you grow in ways that makes a mother’s heart soar. Truly.

Two nights ago, after dinner, we went for a walk and as you picked up treasures of sticks and rocks – you found a lady bug. With your wild-hair from a well-played day, I told your Dad I would be right back. I went to go get my camera. I wanted to soak in these moments… and capture it. As a photographer, taking a photo helps me slow down and see the details, freeze the moment and imprints it on my brain in a way that nothing else I have found truly can.

It is hard to explain in words how amazing you are, Sweets. I am your mother… I believe this to a depth I didn’t know was possible. You have to know that you are like no other. Believe me, sweet girl. You are so extraordinary.

Mica, I hope you never let go of who you are today. This very day – one week before you graduate from Kindergarten. I hope you never let the world muffle the incredible person you are in this very moment…that wild-haired, nature-loving, wise, practical, big-hearted girl that you are.

You love olives and pickles. You love whales and know more about penguins than I ever will. You love to hunt for animal bones as we hike the trails here in Golden and around Denver. (I still can’t believe we have a rule in our house that we cannot touch bones that still have fur on them.) You love rocks and study the detail in each one as your collection grows. You want to be a scientist and study animals… or rocks. πŸ˜€

You don’t like a lot of fuss. You don’t care what your hair looks like as long as it is out of your face. You love the quite parts of the day. You recently asked me where the quietest place on earth was, cuz you were going to live there. πŸ˜€ I said I would only tell you if I could come and visit. πŸ˜€ You love to camp… because it is peaceful and calm… and…well, because….we all sleep in a row…AND eat S’mores! πŸ˜€

You love to snuggle and wrestle. You love to race, but don’t care about who wins. You love to paint, draw… create anything with arts and crafts. πŸ˜€ You are an introvert. For much of your 5.5 years (yes, that .5 is important to you!) you have respected that in yourself and I hope you always do. I have watched in amazement as you pull away from a situation to reboot and then return with a smile. I remember a few months ago when you told me that you will never be a famous singer because you have to sing in front of huge audiences and you don’t want to do that. Well, with that crossed off the list, thankfully there is still more to explore in this world…:D

You love maps and learning about how people all across the globe are different… and the same. (I can’t wait to see what adventures you take me on!) You love to hear stories about real people. Helen Keller, Anne Frank, Rosa Parks, Jane Goodall, Amelia Erhart… are some of your favorites. You love knowing that their stories “really happened”. You take root in that and I hope it is a point of inspiration for you as you grow.

Oh Mica… you have no idea what a gift you are to me. Thank you for showing me the world through your eyes. I am so excited to watch you take the next step, graduate and head to the big school here in Golden. Congratulations for all the hard work you put into this year. You should be proud of yourself. I am so proud of you. I will stand in tearful-awe of you next week, Miss Kindergarten Graduate. I will also stand in gratitude.

I am a huge believer in the whole notion of “its take a village” and Mica you may know this one day… but when you bring your child to school knowing you are placing her in the arms of teachers who love her nearly as much as you do and see your child for the amazing, unique person that they are… well, that is a gift beyond measure too. Mica, I pray you always feel surrounded by this kind of love and support – from all sides of your life. But, if you don’t… cuz some days feel like that… I hope you turn to the sun where we will all be cheering you on!

Oh wait! Look what I found. It is the photo we took the day before you started kindergarten. Unintentionally it looks so much like the one we took this past weekend for your school project… but a school year apart… that same sweet Mica-smile…but a little less kindergartner and a bit more first grader if you ask me. πŸ˜€

Time to celebrate you!

I love you more than dump trucks, more than pickles… more than spaceships. My girl. <3
